Floyd William Brown, 86, Fargo, ND passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 8th at Elim Care Center surrounded by his children.


Floyd W. Brown was born November 2, 1925, the son of Joseph and Ednah Brown of Leonard ND.  Floyd grew up on a farm near Leonard ND and graduated from Leonard High School in 1943.


He enlisted in the United States Navy in June of 1946 serving in the Pacific region through 1948.  He was re-called to active duty for the Korean War in January, 1951, serving on the USS Prairie AD 15.  He married Gloria Jean Ingberg on August 27, 1951 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Fargo, ND.  He remained on active duty through October 1952. 


He earned undergraduate degrees in Business and Social Studies and a Master’s degree in Counseling from North Dakota State University.  He enlisted in the US Naval Reserve in May, 1964 where he continued to serve through his military retirement in November, 1985 with more than 27 years of Naval service and obtained the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer.


Floyd worked as guidance director for Enderlin and Lisbon, ND public schools prior to 1960, when he was hired by then President, John Neumaier, as guidance director for Minnesota State University Moorhead.  He became the Director of Admissions and during his tenure, MSUM’s enrollment grew from 2000 to more than 8000 students.  He retired from MSUM in 1993.


Floyd and Gloria raised a family consisting of one son and two daughters.  After Floyd’s retirement, he and Gloria enjoyed spending time with their children and grandsons at their Lake home near Detroit Lakes, MN.  Gloria passed away in 2004.


Floyd is survived by son Gregory Brown(Bonnie) of Fargo, daughters Mary Christianson(Chris) of Fargo, Jackie Schaefbauer(Jim) of Fargo, three grandchildren Jacob, Joseph, and Jordan Schaefbauer and two step-grandsons Jeremy and Justin Polka and a number of nieces and nephews. 


He was preceded in death by his wife Gloria, his parents, and his sister Marjorie Taylor.


If desired, memorials preferred to Alzheimer’s Association, ND Chapter or Hospice of the Red River Valley.


The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff and care attendants at Pioneer House and Elim Care Center for the loving care Floyd received during his final years.
