Karel Dean Rhoads passed away unexpectedly in his home on July 6, 2012, in West Fargo, ND.
Karel was born in Mitchell, SD, on February 12, 1962, and was adopted three days later by Vincent and Verda Rhoads. He grew up in Huron, SD, and graduated from James Valley Christian School in 1980. Karel went on to attend Brown College Radio Broadcasting Institute in Minneapolis, MN – graduating in 1990. He married Kari Marx on June 15, 1991, and they welcomed a son, Tyler James Vincent into their family. They made their home in Fargo, ND. Although the marriage ended, Karel continued to reside in West Fargo to remain close to his son.
Karel worked various jobs while living in Fargo – most recently as a Call Center Representative at Multiband. It was not a surprise to find Karel working part-time at events at the Fargo Dome or fair grounds in Huron or Fargo, as he had a love for social events and entertainment.
Karel was an active participant and spectator in all of Tyler’s sporting events – and was Tyler’s biggest fan in hockey. He continued to attend games that Tyler coached as an adult, and also attended Tyler’s half-brothers’ extracurricular activities. Karel was drawn to and loved entertaining children. He was always joking and looking for ways to make people laugh and feel good. Karel had a quick laugh and loved to spend time with family and friends – often making the trip from Fargo to Huron to visit. He maintained a close relationship with several of his cousins and friends from his father’s army group. He was a man with a big heart, a quick wit, and was always willing to pitch in and help anyone who needed a hand.
A loving father and devoted son, Karel is survived by his son, Tyler, Fargo, ND; parents Vincent and Verda Rhoads, Huron; sister Verletta Rae Rhoads, Schaumburg, IL; his uncles and aunts - Vernon and Rhoda Rhoads, Olathe, KS; Violet Rhoads, Mitchell, SD; Ozro Traub, Didsbury, Alberta, Canada; Kathy Dubro, Freemont, CA; and many beloved cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by both maternal and paternal grandparents, Ralph M. and Pearl Rhoads: August and Nettie Dubro, two infant brothers and two sisters, and five uncles – Ralph Arthur and Francis Rhoads; Calvin Dubro; Glen Crandall; Albert Anderson, and four aunts – LouNelle Rhoads; Viola Traub; Nina Crandall, and Myrtle Anderson.
